People who know me well might say the odds of me talking about physics are as slim as me discussing football. Yet today, Newton's law of inertia perfectly captures what I see in my coaching practice: "An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force."

How often have we stayed in a job too long or avoided taking action because we weren't sure what we wanted—or were too afraid to fail? Career inertia is real, whether you're an early-career professional seeking your path, a mid-career executive yearning for change, or a seasoned leader contemplating your next act.

The common thread? Change feels overwhelming. But here's the good news: that "unbalanced force" doesn't have to be massive. Momentum can begin with small experiments:

• Conduct an informational interview

• Take on a special project at work

• Try something new you've always been curious about

• Volunteer or enroll in a class

I've seen the incredible power of these small actions. Once you're in motion, clarity and opportunities often emerge naturally.

Have you experienced a shift that led you to something new and unexpected? Please share your story!
